What are the five pillars of Islam?
Islam is built upon five practices. This practice makes a complete cycle in the life of a Muslim. Every Muslim must recognize all the pillars to be referred to as a devoted Muslim.
The pillars are Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj. Let us explain them one after another.
Shahada (Faith)
The proclamation of belief in Allah and his messenger.
Salah (Prayer)
This is the devotion needed of all Muslims. This should be done five times a day.
Zakat (Alms-giving)
The practice of giving to the needy by a Muslim all through a lifetime.
Sawm (Fasting)
This is done during Ramadan. In the holy month of Islam, all Muslims are expected to fast.
Hajj (Pilgrimage)
The sacred visit to the holy city of Mecca. This is required of every Muslim, at least once in a lifetime.
The five pillars of Islam are the practices that makeup Islam. Every Muslim is expected to complete this cycle of the Islamic religion in his or her lifetime. These make up the foundation of Islam.
